Oversized Lab Reports

Here's a new twist on the typical science lab report.  Oversized templates that can double as a gorgeous bulletin board display when finished.  The first 2 sets are templates of a rocket ship and a hound dog.
Ideas for use of the rocket ship include experiments with force and motion or the solar system.  I used the hound dog for a display after modeling the rock cycle.  The bulletin board was titled 4th grade Rock Hounds.  More sets will be coming in the near future.

Nifty Science Lab Foldable Template

If you've ever used foldables you know they are really nifty learning instruments.  I like that they can go on display and then be glued into a notebook later on.  Here is my template for the scientific method as a 4 door foldable.  This one is becoming very popular!

Force & Motion Consensogram Vocabulary Check for the SmartBoard

This  FREE notebook file contains vocabulary words from a 5th grade science unit on force and motion including simple machines. It can be used like entry & exit slips to gauge student perceptions of their understanding. I use one word each day during the unit. This notebook file uses a consensogram. This is a quality tool that shows the frequency of distribution of responses, measures a group's perceptions and allows individuals to view their responses in relation to the entire group by having students place virtual stickers where they feel they are.

1. Can be used to identify the group’s perception of effort, commitment or understanding.
2. Can be used with a large group of people when time is limited.

Calling All Elementary Science Teachers

I am well known in our school for saying "My number one priority is safety!" I guess that's because teaching in the science lab raises plenty of opportunity for "accidents". As a new school year approaches I highly recommend my elementary lab safety contract. During the first week of school, I review this contract with each of my classes and require both student and parent to sign it. I always plan an introductory lab the day after I send it home for homework. Students know that if they don't have it signed and returned they have to sit at "observation island" (a remote seat with a clipboard and some paper) to record what others are doing. It only takes 1 student having to do that 1 time and the contracts all come flooding in. As a matter of fact, word travels quickly in elementary schools and my previous students have warned the newbies. I haven't had someone sit at observation island in the past 2 years. So, if I have piqued your interest and safety is a concern in your science class, click the link and download my FREE science safety contract.

Every good science teacher knows that every good experiment follows the scientific method.
